Logo Design

nepal-logo-585With logo design, anything goes. Why? Because this is your opportunity to define to the world who you are. This is your opportunity to create a single, solitary element that will distinguish you from the competition; one element that will help market you as the leader in your field. A stellar logo design will help prepare you for a marketing blitz: letterhead, business cards, envelopes, e-mail templates, so on and so forth.

Logos are an interesting thing. Think of the last time you purchased a greeting card for someone. Did you rush off to the grocery store’s Hallmark section? What about the last time you realized your tank was nearing “E,” and you chose to roll into a Shell Gas Station(despite how much more expensive their gas may have been?) Brand recognition has it’s payoffs - all the more reason why choosing your logo design is so important.

The primary element of identity branding is, really, logo design. Once you have taken the time to find a company name that really speaks for your product, it’s time to work on building a classic logo. Do you want timeless, or trendy? Keeping in mind that even with something that seems timeless, EVERY brand will go through an “updating,” you have seven primary (and, might I add, widely accepted) standards that you want your logo to meet.

  1. Your logo needs to be equally effective in color as it does in black and white. Think about this one - all of the different purposes your logo will serve - envelopes, letterhead, business cards… the list goes on and on. If your logo relies heavily on a color gradient, you either run the risk of it losing it’s effectiveness when you print it in black and white, or you go broke printing everything in color.
  2. Your logo design must - at the very least - imply something about your company. Some of the most obvious - this is most commonly seen with food: Burger King, Taco Bell - are that much more memorable because of their design. This really ties in with…
  3. Your logo’s design must be appropriate for your business. Think of those previously mentioned - Burger King, Taco Bell, Shell - all appropriate right? You had no trouble remembering those logos, right? See how easy it was to come up with those images in your head? Think of what that kind of recognition could do for your company. Who doesn’t love free publicity?
  4. Your logo’s text should be done in a readable font. This is more so for those who are prone to using handwritten fonts in their logo. Higher end products and markets come to mind - Davidoff, Cartier, etc. Keeping everything else in mind, always remember that a person who is just being introduced to your brand for the first time still needs to be able to read what it says!
  5. You’re going to want it to be distinguishable from afar. If you are opening a restaurant near an exit ramp, you want people to be able to say, “Hey! I know that place! Let’s stop by there!”
  6. Logos should be balanced and avoiding all clutter. If it’s unnecessary, don’t be afraid to pitch it. Know when to say when. Think of the TGI Friday’s logo. Could it work without the border? Perhaps. But the point before it starts to lose it’s effctiveness, is the point when you’ve done the right thing.
  7. Your logo should be easily scalable and not lose any quality in doing so. Meaning, it really should look the same on an 8 foot poster as it does on the corner of an envelope.
