WordPress Blog Design
WordPress is an interesting phenomenon. Because of it’s endlessly modifiable nature, it can do just about anything that we want. In fact, this very website runs on the WordPress platform. It can absolutely be used as a content management system, and whatever your needs are in terms of a system that allows you to easily log in and manage a website, WordPress can help.
There needs to be painstakingly detailed attention paid to the development of a WordPress site, though. It’s a simple website to design for anyone moderately-versed in PHP, yes, but if the developer isn’t careful, you could wind up spending just as much having your WP site updated as you spent having it built.
Some things to consider, when getting a blog designed and created
Expansion
Think of where you are now, and where you want to be in a year. Yes. A year. By how much, and in what ways, would you need to expand? Does the blog design you (or your developer) have in mind allow for you to expand in that fashion?
Style
We know… the Web 2.0 clean, fresh, blue & green dream scene is the thing right now. The web is now saturated with clouds, gradients, and millions of big bright icons. There’s nothing wrong with that (depending upon who you talk to.) The question then becomes, is your blog one that will require you to keep up to date with trends? When the next big thing comes, will you need to change your design, again? Would it benefit you to simply work to develop one timeless design that could last you a while?
SEO for WordPress
This one is tricky. There are plenty of people out there who are familiar with WordPress, and know it back to front. There are even more people out there who are familiar with search engine optimization, and know it back to front. The number of people who know BOTH thoroughly enough to say they can develop and execute a fully optimized WordPress blog? Not so many.
A developer who isn’t careful can hard-code some obstacles into a WordPress blog (or any blog, for that matter.) It’s important to discuss - if not the actual hard coding of SEO abilities into the site, at least the ability to expand into that direction in the future.
Monetization
Monetization is merely the process of turning something into, well… a money-making entity. In terms of blogging, it means manipulating a blog into a money making machine by adding advertisements, partnerships, paid links, so on and so forth. Are you blogging to represent a company? What about as an add-on feature to an existing site? Are you looking to blog to make money? These are only a few of a billion different scenarios behind why people blog. It’s all about knowing when placing ads is appropriate. If you’re blogging for Coke, you don’t put ads on your site and provide Pepsi the opportunity to advertise on your site. You’re competing with the enemy on your own territory… and a lot of times, you’ll lose just because of the hilarity of it all.
In the end, it is clear that there are numerous things to consider when having a blog designed. It’s important to have a company on your side that will not only think of these things for you, but will also help you think of solutions.
